Ecomondo 2025: The Future of CSS Between Innovation and Sustainability

On 5 November 2025, within the framework of Ecomondo, the conference “CSS: a feasible future” was held, focusing on the sustainable management of resources and the growing relevance of Solid Recovered Fuel (CSS) in industrial production. Avv. David Roettgen presented a detailed overview of the current regulatory landscape, retracing the evolution of rules on energy recovery, authorisation regimes and quality standards applicable to CSS.

The presentation emphasised how CSS represents a strategic resource in the ecological transition, particularly for energy-intensive sectors seeking to reduce dependence on traditional fuels. Specific attention was devoted to the main regulatory challenges, the interaction with Integrated Environmental Authorisations and the implications of recent case law on the classification and use of CSS.

In the final discussion, the focus shifted to future developments, including industrial projects aimed at increasing the share of alternative fuels and improving emission performance. Participants underlined the need for consistent technical guidelines, clearer criteria and investments in advanced pre-treatment technologies. The event confirmed the growing interest in solutions that combine competitiveness, environmental protection and circularity.
